I began this project as an exploration of the way female characters are portrayed in television and film. These forms of entertainment have been a major part of my life. As an only child growing up I would often have to keep myself entertained. In my mind, I would create a character that I would act as along side my favorite pirates, super-humans, and scoundrals. I would become these characters but unlike me, they are strong, athletic, cunning, and mysterious. These fantasies allowed me to say and do things that I could only dream of. These women would always have a witty comeback to a sarcastic remark and would never hesitate to confront an issue head-on. I do not view these characters as representations of myself, but rather as having qualities that I sometimes wish I possess. This series is a realization of my dreams of escaping reality and becoming a stronger person while living in a culture immersed in digital media. Instant streaming has made it possible for me to submerge myself in hours of visual stories without a break, except for that brief moment every few hours when I am asked “Are you still watching?” Longing for more than traditional damsels in distress like Cindy Sherman explores, my women are independent and often defiant. By using cinematic lighting, costumes, props, and location scouting, I treat each image as its own story with an untold ending. I want to invite the viewer to imagine what happens next in the story, and to give them a small glimpse into my imagined realities.
